Symphony No 7

Simón Bolívar Symphony Orchestra

On its international tours the Simón Bolívar Symphony Orchestra has enthralled audiences with its high-energy playing.

Recordings, though, are more problematic, even when they are live, like this performance of Mahler’s Symphony No 7 from the orchestra’s home in Caracas, Venezuela.

Gustavo Dudamel conducts with a strong sense of colour and bursts of fire, but the orchestra’s virtuosity sounds hard-won.

Admirers of what these young Venezuelans have achieved need not hold back, but the top Mahler orchestras just have this music in their bones.
